A long time ago, a friend told me about how he was using his modem as a
voice mail/phone answering machine/call redirector.  I forget the name of
project.  I'm sure if you Googled "linux modem voicemail" you'll find it.

Anyhow, it seems like the perfect solution -- you can encode it into
anything you like, it'll already be on a hard drive, and the price is
essentially free (the price of a modem).
