[nylug-talk] IR transmitters?

I'm looking to (this is a rather silly project, probably, but hopefully
fun) make a set of command-line scripts to control my window air
conditioner through the compter using an IR transmitter, but I don't
really know how to search for one. I'm guessing that I'll probably want to
have access to it through USB (my mac mini has no regular serial
connections) and am hoping that there exists a library for CIR (commercial
infrared, i believe?) which I think the remote speaks at the device. Has
anyone done anything like this, or have any pointers I might use to
investiage further?
