You're falsely assuming that "better" is more expensive.
512MB of Corsair ValueRAM at Newegg is $43 if rated for PC2100 (they no
longer sell PC1600), $40 if rated for PC3200 (and they throw in some
kind of freebie) with it. Same latency specs. There's more supply of the
faster stuff, and more brands represented, so cheaper price. The PC3200
is more likely to be able to be "recycled" in the future, too. FYI.
