All USB devices come with a Vendor ID and a Product ID. The combination are
unique to each and every USB device. Install the usbutils package on your
distro and run the lsusb command. You may get output like this:
[root at europa ~]# lsusb
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 05ac:1205 Apple Computer, Inc.
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
in our case my USB device (an Apple Ipod) has the vendor ID of 05ac and the
product ID of 1205. You can take either number and search for them at
http://www.qbik.ch/usb/devices/ for any leads.
Cool, HTH
