My setup (Maildrop) scans the message almost immediately upon arrival at
the server, with exceptions made for postmaster@, abuse@, spam-l,
spamtools, and the Spamassassin list (and the anti-spam lists I can
count on to take care of themselves).  Everyone's mail stream is
different, but in mine, I get a lot of spam via mailing lists I want to
be on.  I would prefer to save the non-trivial processing involved in
SpamAssassin, but it doesn't take much spam to start making even my
sorted mail look cluttered.
