Well its more a good practice thing.
Cron is a tool to execute a program in the background. So the  
prerequisites to run that program should be as minimal as possible  
(and that does not include a running X server _AND_ and xauth cookie  
set for the user under which id that program runs).
Sure it works but it definitely is a bad habit (like looking for the  
lighter on the floor in front of the passenger seat while cruzing  
whith 70 mph over the highway)
