It's intensely uncommon.  I've never seen it on RedHat or SuSE, I don't
see it on any current debian or ubuntu machine to which I have access, nor
do I see it on my OSX laptop (just for perspective's sake).

In this case you've got more than enough cause to ask the rep to tell you
what linux distros they use for testing, and which they claim to support.
