Hi Pete,
Here are a few questions:

is he an experienced windows user?
is he able to web surf, use google and use ebay?
Can he use google to find any info like this?
has he used google to find help for window questions?
Has he ever used unix, bsd or linux before?
has he tried using a live cd like knoppix before?
does he have a space computer to 'test' or mess up?

which part of the installation process would he need to most help on?
	getting the cd
	installing 
	knowing the settings for the install
	making changes afterwards
	asking for help on email, irc or something else?

is he someone who does not want to use email or irc to get things
working?

the last I checked, any *nix system demands a willingness to learn and
get your fingers dirty to some degree. So delaying that by having
someone setting it up, will make the process of finding or asking for
help later, all the more shocking and disturbing. But that just my
impression.

Also, have you considered finding a lug in his area? They may be happy
to help.
