* Description: Stevens Institute of Technology is seeking candidates for
a full-time position as System Administrator in the School of Sciences
and Arts. The IT staff in the School of Sciences and Arts provides
professional support to faculty, research staff, administrative staff,
graduate students and undergraduate students. The System
Administrator's primary responsibility is to administer all Unix-based
servers and workstations, ensuring the maximum security and
availability of all necessary services, performing operating system
and software maintenance and upgrades, troubleshooting software and
hardware problems, and scheduling system backups. Unix hardware
includes several servers providing the most common essential services
(NFS, centralized authentication, SSH, SMTP, POP, IMAP, FTP, CVS,
HTTP), more than ninety desktop workstations, a high-performance
computing cluster, and a Media and Arts laboratory with seventeen G5
workstations. Operating systems include NetBSD, Linux, IRIX, Solaris,
and Mac OS X. The IT administrators coordinate with department
directors, faculty, and research staff in anticipating and planning
for future computing services covering all aspects of IT
infrastructure in the School of Sciences and Arts: hardware, software,
networking and security, facilities, and staffing. Qualified
candidates will have at least a Bachelor's degree (Master's degree
preferred) and at least 3 years of experience in administering
multi-user Unix systems. Strong interpersonal and communication skills
are essential. Specific desired skills include a strong understanding
of Unix-based operating systems (kernel-userland interactions, system
calls, job control, process environment); experience with common Unix
tools and utilities; a strong knowledge of network protocols and
TCP/IP networking; programming experience in a systems language (C,
Perl, Python, a shell); ability to debug and patch complex open source
