      Provide senior systems programming support for the University's email, calendaring, web and other Unix servers in a dynamic, 7X24 production data center environment.

      The Systems Programmer II will: manage performance, reliability and security on Unix systems supporting 30,000 email users and 4 million web requests per day. Install, configure, document and maintain Unix operating systems (Linux, Solaris) and applications including Sendmail, Bind, Horde, MIMEDefang, SpamAssassin, ClamAV, Cfengine, MeetingMaker Server, Apache and Tomcat. Independently authorize system upgrades based on evaluation and testing. Consult and collaborate with application developers, database administrators, service providers and data center operations staff on application issues and problems. Serve as a principal source of technical expertise for assigned applications. Design, implement and document tools for maintenance, monitoring and capacity planning. Track developing technology. Assist clients in developing specifications. Pilot technical enhancements to the University email and web infrastructure. Mentor junior systems programmers. Perform some off-shift and weekend work with rotating on call coverage.

    * Required Skills:

      Bachelor's degree plus 4 years of experience supporting production Unix systems in a 7x24 environment, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Extensive knowledge of and experience with Unix and/or Solaris operating systems, utilities, tools and applications. Preferred: experience with automated install and configuration management systems such as Jumpstart, Kickstart, NIM, Cfengine; experience with server virtualization, load-balancing and clustering technologies; experience managing a multiple Unix platform environment; experience managing SANs and SAN attached servers, experience with Sendmail, Bind, Horde, MIMEDefang, SpamAssassin, ClamAV, Cfengine, MeetingMaker Server, Cyrus Imap, OpenLDAP, Apache and Tomcat. Thorough knowledge of and extensive experience supporting email and web servers and related applications. Thorough knowledge of host-based security best practices and tools. Demonstrated ability to write scripts in Shell, Perl or other administrative scripting languages. Demonstrated analytical and creative problem-solving skills and ability to work independently or as member of team. Demonstrated ability to develop and document complex procedures. Excellent communication and organizational skills.
